Choosing a Refurbished Server: Four Reasons to Consider the HPE DL380 Gen10

Which server should you choose when your budget is limited but expansion matters? This is a frequent procurement question at Server Plus. The HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 is one of the refurbished 2U platforms we evaluate first: boot storage, disk capacity, networking and GPUs can be configured around the workload, directing the budget to the resources that matter.

1. Dual M.2 SATA boot drives preserve front bays

A primary riser with two M.2 SATA slots can accommodate compatible boot drives without using another PCIe card slot, leaving front bays for data. Confirm the actual riser, mounting accessories and interface before purchase. This means M.2 SATA, not NVMe.

  • Proxmox VE: expose both drives directly through appropriate SATA/AHCI settings and create a ZFS boot mirror, without S100i software RAID.
  • Windows Server: S100i RAID 1 is an option with a supported OS version and driver; enable the corresponding UEFI/controller settings.
  • VMware ESXi: check version-specific boot-media requirements and compatibility lists. S100i software RAID does not support ESXi and cannot be treated as a supported mirrored boot solution.

2. Expand from 8SFF to 24SFF and invest in stages

An upgrade-capable 8SFF chassis can accommodate two additional 8SFF cages and backplanes, with a SAS Expander and cabling as required by the controller, to plan for 24 front 2.5-inch drives. Meet current needs first and add capacity later instead of committing the entire storage budget upfront.

Check the chassis version, front panel, backplanes, controller, cables and cooling. This is not simply a matter of inserting more drives, and SAS/SATA expansion does not apply directly to NVMe. ZFS or Ceph also requires verification of HBA/disk passthrough and storage architecture.

3. FlexibleLOM 10G leaves PCIe slots available

The DL380 Gen10 provides a dedicated FlexibleLOM slot for 10G networking, leaving general-purpose PCIe slots for RAID controllers, HBAs or GPUs. Some models also have four embedded 1GbE ports; verify the actual hardware, particularly Network Choice configurations.

  • 562FLR-T: Intel X550 controller and two 10GBASE-T ports for copper networks.
  • 562FLR-SFP+: Intel X710 controller and two 10G SFP+ ports for compatible optical modules or DACs.
  • Confirm switches, cables, transceivers and drivers together for a complete server-to-switch connection.

4. Plan power, cooling and memory for dual-GPU on-premises AI

GPU expansion depends on risers, CPUs and chassis configuration. When evaluating dual RTX A4000 through RTX A6000 configurations, check card length, thickness, power draw, auxiliary power cables, PSUs and fans. Staying within 300W per card is not the only compatibility condition; delivery depends on the confirmed configuration and testing.

Two RTX A6000 cards offer 48GB each, totaling 96GB, but do not automatically become a single memory pool. The inference framework must distribute the workload across GPUs. For Qwen3.8-27B, a rough BF16 estimate for 27 billion parameters is about 54GB for weights alone, plus KV cache, runtime overhead and concurrent requests. This is a capacity-planning starting point, not a throughput or context-length guarantee.

On-premises deployment lets enterprises manage models, data and access permissions for internal knowledge retrieval, document processing and AI inference. Fully offline operation still depends on deployment and application settings.

Server Plus confirms the complete configuration, not just the model

In our experience with refurbished equipment, the DL380 Gen10’s mechanical design, serviceability and expansion options make it an enterprise platform worth evaluating early. Hardware health, complete accessories and suitability for deployment matter when buying a used server.

For Proxmox VE, VMware, business applications, backup or on-premises AI, Server Plus can confirm CPU, memory, drives, controllers, networking and GPU components, test equipment before shipment, and confirm warranty and delivery terms in the quotation. Share your budget, operating system and workload with our sales and technical team.

FAQ

Does every DL380 Gen10 have dual M.2 boot slots?

Check the actual primary riser and accessories; the model name alone is not sufficient. This article describes M.2 SATA, not M.2 NVMe support.

Can an 8SFF server immediately accept 24 drives?

An upgrade-capable chassis still requires the appropriate cages, backplanes, controller or SAS Expander, cables and cooling, with the drive interface verified.

Can two A6000 cards with 96GB total memory run every large model?

Total memory alone is not enough. Verify multi-GPU inference, precision, weight size, KV cache, context and concurrency requirements, then test capacity and performance.
